The site at 110 SE Inner Loop in Georgetown was just a greenfield little over a year ago. Now, about 75 employees are working at the plant to prepare the shipping of the first solar shingles produced there. The California-based company has other plants in the US but keeps expanding with every higher demand of their solar shingles.
Executives told the Austin Business Journal that the new factory could boost GAF manufacturing capacity by 500 %, and allowing it to produce around 5 million solar shingles per year. That is the equivalent of 300 megawatts annually – enough to install solar roofs on about 50,000 home per year.
GAF executives said that this would make the company the largest producer of solar roofing in the world. Ralph Robinett, who is the company’s senior vice president of manufacturing and supply chain said, “, the sound of humans and machinery making parts for the solar roofing industry is “music to my ears” It’s feeling very real now, which is great to see after all it coming together over the course of more than 12 months.
